So successful have his wayward ramblings been that his following on Twitter has doubled to almost 2.5 million followers! Currently unemployed since March 7th 2011, when CBS and Warner Bros fired Charlie Sheen from the show ‘Two and a Half Men’ due to his ‘dangerous behaviour’. The comedy sitcom made Sheen the highest paid television actor, in which he plays a hedonistic jingle writer, whilst in real life he was far more excessive, is this a case of art imitating life?

Charlie Sheen had apparently demanded $3 million per episode in February 2011, he was reportedly earning $2m per episode at the time. Clearly upset by his dismissal from the show, Sheen has remained defiant of the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre and has recently filed a $100m legal action against him. His latest Tweet may be reference to his dispute, it reads “#Fastball; Torpedo away… You corporate Trolls were warned. And now you’ve been served! c“. He frequently references his catchphrase on his Twitter account #TigerBlood and #winning and currently follows 31 users who include some verified accounts such as @carmenelectra, @ParisHilton, @TheSlyStallone, @FloydMayweather, @iamdiddy, @piersmorgan, @HowardStern, @Alyssa_Milano.

Recent reports of Charlie Sheen’s life have been worrying indeed, he lives with two women and authorities have taken his children into custody for their own safety. His acting family and famous father Martin Sheen are also worried about his mental health and lifestyle which has included alcohol and drug abuse, for which he has so far unsuccessfully sought assistance for and has been the cause of three failed marriages.

Shunned from Hollywood (for the moment) maybe his Twitter activities could be an outlet for his creative frustrations and help accomplish some type of therapy that will allow him to reconnect with his audience and his family.

The sales figures outstrip those of Apple’s iPhone and iPad during a 60 day period since launch. Guinness World Records said that Microsoft sold eight million devices between 4th November 2010 and 3rd January 2011 at an average rate of 133,333 a day. The Kinect is an infrared camera add-on for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 games console, although diffrent to iPhones and iPads, such figures puts it in a league occupied by a small range of other successful electronic devices including Apples iPhone, iPad and the BlackBerry smart phone

The original iPhone was released in June 2007 and the latest iPhone 4 was released in June 2010, reports suggest that Apple has sold over 89 million units of these smart phones to date. (89,974,000 to be exact) according to Wikipedia. Apple sold one million iPhones in 74 days.

The first version of the iPad was released on April 2010 and took 28 days to sell one million devices and sold over 3 million devices in 80 days, leading to 15 million iPads being sold up to January 2011. With the iPad 2 just released Apple have released this version to 10,000 retail outlets compared to 221 Apple Stores and 1,100 Best Buy Stores for the original iPad launch (in the US). The iPad 2 sold out in major U.S. cities within hours, with sales figures of around 500,000 within the first three days, the iPad 2 looks set to be another fast selling consumer electronic device. Since launching the BlackBerry phone in 2002 (the pager system had been released in 1999), BlackBerry have reportedly sold approximately 100 million handsets between 2002 and June 2010.

John Galliano during the first week of Paris fashion week has seen his least poignant moment, the iconic British fashion designer has been dismissed as head designer of Christian Dior for ‘odious behaviour’ and making anti Semitic remarks in a drunken rant at a couple outside the Perle cafe in Paris. Galliano was arrested on Thursday 24th February 2011 for insulting a Jewish woman Géraldine Bloch, 35 and her Asian boyfriend Philippe Virgiti, 41, during an altercation at the Perle cafe in Paris. John Galliano has denied making anti Semitic remarks (which is punishable in France by up to six months in prison) and is counter-suing the couple for defamation, police have said Galliano was twice over the recommended blood alcohol limit. Unfortunately a woman has come forward about a earlier incident which occurred in October 2010 and a mobile phone footage has surfaced of Galliano at the Perle cafe in December which he can be seen making rude remarks to two women!

The incomprehensible and verbally abusive outburst from a leading light of the fashion industry has not gone down well with his former employers and friends. Sidney Toledano, Dior Chief Executive issued a statement on Tuesday 1st March 2011:

“I condemn most firmly the statements made by John Galliano which are a total contradiction with the essential values that have always been defended by the House of Christian Dior.”

Oscar winner Natalie Portman who is the face of Miss Dior Cherie perfume, is herself Jewish and was a friend of John said:

“In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.”

Although Italian designer Giorgio Armani was more compassionate in his assessment and said he felt “sorry for” his colleague.

The 50 year old British Fashion Designer of the Year for 1987, 1994, 1995 and 1997 has had a distinguished career in an industry that tolerates tantrums especially from Prodigious talents such as those of John Galliano. Whatever the cost to Dior reputation, decisive action by the Dior management has effectively limited any negative reflection on the brand, however not the same can be easily said of John Galliano’s reputation. The Dior Autumn / Winter show featuring Galliano’s design is still to go ahead and John Galliano has apologised unreservedly for his behaviour.

It is rumoured that either Yves Saint Laurent designer Stefano Pilati or Dior Homme designer, Hedi Slimane could succeed Galliano. A flawed genius he may be (someone once said all geniuses are flawed), John has made a major contribution to fashion. Who can predict what the future will bring especially if he is remorseful about his behaviour and makes a genuine effort to change this particular aspect. He has friends in the Jewish community – maybe it would be worthwhile for someone to throw an arm around his creative shoulders to exercise some of those personal demons.

China, in contrast, is booming thanks to a manufacturing rise that has lasted years, expanding domestic industries and infrastructure too. An emphasis on that infrastructure has been a solid foundation for growth, and one which many companies have built upon as a result.

The last few decades has seen a dramatic increase in the number of elderly female drivers on the roads. According to statistics from the UK Department for Transport only 4% of women over the age of 70 had driving licences in 1976. This figure jumped to 20% in the 90s and today is at 36%.
The cross over point seems to be somewhere between 50 and 60 years. But what is the reasoning behind this? According to the statistics older female drivers are responsible for more accidents than older male drivers. Insurers believe this is possibly because they often let men do more of the driving and are not as confident when it is their turn to get behind the wheel.

Men are also more likely to become unable to drive or pass away before their partners and this can force women who don’t have the necessary confidence to get behind the wheel.

Of course, the difference in insurance prices should be seen as a stereotype or a sexist attack on women. Britain’s safest driver quite the roads two years ago, aged 94. She had completed more than 600,000 miles without even a speeding ticket.

Muriel Gladwin had 82 years of driving behind her, before she decided to “quit while she’s ahead.” The former shopkeeper spoke to the Daily Mail, explaining how she was looking forward to retiring without even a blemish on her record.
